Neatly clipped and always maintained - prim and proper, the boxwood hedges are one key feature of the English garden. These could be varied in height as well as in expanse and in some cases they would even be used to make mazes around the landscape.

A plant palette is essentially what guides every designer in coming up with their designs. Whether you are a landscape designer or you specialize in interior décor; as a designer, you will always need to work with a palette. But why is it such an important part of the design process?

1. Assists you come up with your design

It is on the plant palette that you can put the ideas you have for the space you are set to design. This would be right from the location of the spaces on to the plants you intend to use on the space. Having a plant palette will help you see how everything will all tie up, before you eventually go and put it in practice on ground.

The universe is surrounded by symmetry, even human beings themselves are symmetrical. This is perhaps why it is so important to have a sense of symmetry in whichever space you may be designing. But how do you have symmetry within an outdoor space while still maintaining the interest of that space and not making it boring and drab? It is hard, but it can be done as it has been done before. It is the right of the customer to get what they pay for. 

Bilateral symmetry

This is the most common kind of symmetry, but it is not used that much in landscaping because it gives very formal effects. Such can be seen in the traditional Tudor knot gardens. Here, herbs were planted in strict patterns and given very tight clipping to result in a very formal landscape. 

Foundation plants do more than just cover the ground around the area where the house meets the ground. They are the most important element in making that transition between hardscape and landscape.
