How to clean and care for countertops

Countertops in the kitchen and bathroom need to be cleaned and cared for. Countertops are made from different materials and therefore, their mode of cleaning and caring varies. Below is how you can clean and care for different types of countertops.

Granite counter tops

The countertops are cleaned by wiping with warm and soapy water with thorough rinsing. To avoid scratching the surface, do not use scrub pads or abrasive cleansers though a mild breach can be used. In case it has a stain, you can remove it using water and baking soda paste. You can also mix talc with diluted ammonia and hydrogen peroxide or bleach. Scrub the stained area with a soft brush and then paste rinse thoroughly. The same cleaning and removal of stains should be done for concrete countertops. The only difference is that you should seal the countertops with sealers that are formulated specifically for each type of the countertop.

Wood counter tops


Wash the countertops with water and dishwashing soap that is mild. Rinse and dry the countertop using a soft cloth. You can remove stains by blotting to prevent them from sinking deeper into the wood. For a light stain, you can sprinkle some salt and then scrub using the cut side of a lemon. You can remove a darker stain using a cotton swab that has been dipped in hydrogen peroxide. If the stain is permanent, sand the wood and refinish. To seal the countertop, wipe a coat of mineral oil and allow it to soak. Use only a little amount of oil. The oil keeps prevents the wood from drying, adds sheen and seals it. Avoid using vegetable oil or linseed because they may rot.

Stainless steel countertops

The countertops can be done either dry cleaning or wet cleaning. For dry cleaning, wipe the countertop using a microfiber cloth.  Wet clean is using a soft cloth that has been dipped into warm water and dishwashing liquid solution. Use clean water to rinse and wipe it dry with a soft towel. The countertop does not need sealing and it stains resistant.

Marble counter tops


The countertops need to be cleaned regularly using a damp cloth or a microfiber to prevent it from having streaks. Dry it using a soft cloth and avoid air-drying it so that it does not develop water spots. To deep clean, mix neutral dishwashing liquid with warm water and use it to wipe the countertop. Do thorough rinsing and wipe it completely dry. Marble can be permanently be damaged by acidic liquids. In case drinks such as wine, tomatoes, soft drinks and orange juice spill on the countertops, blot them immediately. You may need to use the services of a professional to remove deep stains. The countertops can only be sealed using a product, specifically for marbles surfaces.

Glass counter tops


Glass countertops can be cleaned using any cleansers or commercial soap used for cleaning of hard surfaces. Clean using a sponge or a soft cloth so that you do not scratch the surface. Cleaning tools that are scratchy and abrasive cleaners should be avoided. The good thing about glass countertops is that they do not need sealing and they are stain resistant.
