A dog shed is necessary for enhancing the dog’s safety and comfort. However, considering the way contractors and repair people levy high charges for these structures, you would feel like retreating from the idea, but you can DIY. Constructing a shed for your dog, can ensure it is always safe from other animals or people who would want to steal the pet. This comes in handy, when the dog sleeps outside. The shed will not only give the dog an assurance of security, but it will also protect it from weather elements and in particular during winter. This is a pet project you can crack alone. You do not have to high skills in building and you can do it alone with the help of a family member. Usually, the size and the design of the shed will depend solely on the size of your pet and your taste.
You start by gathering the materials and tools for the project. Most of the tools and materials, you may be having them in your store or garage. It is time to use those chips of wood, which lie recklessly in the store. To be specific, you will require a screw gun, duct tape, screws of various sizes, shingles, and saber saw. In addition, you will need plywood, 2 by 4 planks of wood, two door hinges, carpenter pencil, and a door latch. Then, take the measurements of your pet’s width, length, and height. Preferably, your shed should be 11 to 17 inches than the dog, 6 to 9 inches taller, and 11 to 17 inches wider. The dimensions of the dog shed, also relies on your discretion. All the same, it should not be so large such that the pet feels uncomfortable and insecure. If possible layout the plan of the shed; it will make the pet DIY project easy. Use the 2 by 4 wood pieces to build the foundation. Then, cut a proportionate piece of the plywood and screw it into place. Cut other three pieces of plywood and prop them on the foundation. Use the duct tape to keep them up, temporarily. Now, take some of the remaining 2 by 4 planks of wood and fix them in all the inside corners, to make the walls strong.
On the fourth piece of the plywood, cut out a door opening, measuring some three to five inches bigger than your dog. Screw the piece in place. You can decide to leave the opening as such or use the cutout to make a door. If you choose to have a door on your dog shed, remove a half an inch from each side of the plywood. Fix a pair hinges on one side of the door space with screws and attach the latch on the door. It is now time to fix the roof. Cut it from the plywood. Do not that it should hang a little bit over each wall. Use screws to fasten the roof to the walls. To make the roof, water resistant, apply shingles. For the shingles, it will be best, if you fix them using shorter screws. With that, your dog shed is ready. You can place at the patio, just any other outdoor living place, or the backyard. However, always ensure that the shed is raised from the ground.
